Doce Percepciones de un Silencio
November 23rd 2018
"Twelve wildly contrasting, yet strangely cohesive entries in this collaborative project, and each of them is intriguing in its own way... It would be like seeing the Mona Lisa while listening to David Bowie, then seeing it while listening to Vivaldi"
The Line of Best Fit
Spanish filmmaker and musician Laura León presents a collection of twelve film scores, each soundtracking her 2018 film Percepciones de un Silencio.
Featuring musicians from across the Mediterranean (both European and African), the Middle East, Spanish-speaking Latin America, South-East Asia among others, these twelve scores represent twelve individual iterations of Laura’s film, here released as a collection to make up an “album” of wilfully non-standard construction.
Each of the twelve film scores teases out new meaning to its visual accompaniment, but the film does not change across these twelve versions. With each new soundtrack comes a new experience - some are abstract, others sweet; some are nostalgic where others are intense. The results - as an album of music - comprise twelve pieces of exactly the same length, with a unifying theme, yet borne from a multitude of wildly distinct processes, backgrounds (lingual, geographical, cultural and musical), deliveries and creative desires.
Born in Vigo, now based in Barcelona, Laura León created the film Percepciones de un Silencio from lomographic photography. Rich with symbolism and subtle imagery, the piece - even at its short length - gives up few of its own secrets, yet promises many.
Doce Percepciones de un Silencio will be released by Phantom Limb in November 2018 on digital formats, or accompanied with a printed zine of essays and imagery pertaining to the film, its construction and its philosophies.
