Fran & Flora

"quality that you couldn’t fake or acquire in a hurry" - BBC

"border-defying thrills & chills in equal amounts" - Mojo

"an album of beguiling beauty" - The Wire

The Eastern European/Klezmer informed duo are a force for demystifying the world of contemporary global string music.

They create an atmosphere from sound-worlds which are at once accessible and earthen using tasteful electronics of collaborator Sam Beste, unrivalled classical pedigree, deep studies in jazz & folk and relentless worldwide study of Klezmer via jewish roots.

Live, the duo's energy and enthusiasm for the music they are playing is infectious; evidently having the time of their lives, it's impossible for audiences not to be absorbed.

The duo began writing music together after touring globally for many years as string provisions, hired guns, for such big name artists as Sam Lee, Cosmo Sheldrake & Talvin Singh. Forming a bond of friendship on the road, the pair evolved into exploring what material they had shared fascination for.

Each time they took solo sabbaticals to study with  a master, they would bring that experience back into the fold to add a new slant on the unique vibration which resulted. These influences are all playfully explored and drawn upon within the Fran & Flora repertoire.

Their debut full length 'Unfurl' was developed in the studio with Sam Beste over 3 years, adding layers and explorative elements of electronics to their sound world. The record was produced in a DIY spirit, as was the 2019 release. The duo self-released the record, booked their own launch show (sold out Cafe OTO), and enjoyed resounding positive PR across the board (BBC 4 Womens Hour, Cerys Matthews 6 music etc). They were invited to perform on many renowned platforms such as London Jazz Festival, Worldwide FM, Kings Place etc.

Since then, 2 more recordings have surfaced also gaining positive reactions on press and radio, namely "Stardust (Doina iii)" and a Portico Quartet Remix of "La Obreja" which gained fandom from Mary Anne Hobbs who seemingly couldn't stop playing the track for days!

In mid 2019 the duo were awarded ACE funding. They toured the UK several times, as well as further afield in Europe, and Canada.
